“Embrace
- Volunteer Caregiving – Make the Difference”
May
5 – 11, 2003
Welcome
to our official week! This
is our time to celebrate, recognize and share the achievements of
hospice palliative care in your community and through out the nation.
This year our focus is drawn to the volunteer caregiver – those
incredible people who make a difference to the end-of-life journey.
Phase 1
As
you plan your events around this theme and those very important people,
we at the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) have
drawn together some resources to assist you. By this time you may have
received notice from your Provincial Association to order your 2003
National Hospice Palliative Care Week poster,
and bookmarkers,
along with The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation booklet “A Guide to Caregivers”
and Living Lessons pamphlet. Please your provincial association to take delivery of these
items.
Phase 2
The
second phase of the 2003 resource package will be disseminated
electronically. We at
CHPCA, in conjunction with our National Advisory Committee, which
consists of provincial representation from various provinces, have
strived to bring you tools that will assist in highlighting your
achievements and promoting hospice palliative care awareness. Please use
these resources freely and share them with others as you spread the
message during national hospice palliative care week and throughout the
year.
Based
on your requests, a power point presentation
(1.4 Mb) has been created to address hospice
palliative care. Using provoking images from Living Lessons, key phrases
are joined together to vividly describe the essential components of this
incredible end-of-life journey. The power point presentation can easily
be adapted to any locale or hospice palliative care situation whether it
is used for education or as a community presentation.
We
have been asked time and again for
personal
stories (1 Mb) that safeguard specific identity while dealing with
end-of-life issues. The stories we have gathered come to you to be
shared openly in groups as you give examples of the significant and
varied role of the caregiver.
Other
noteworthy pieces from Living Lessons are included for your use and
circulation. They are "What
Caregivers Can Do" and the
Living
Lessons brochure. You’ll notice that the brochure is made
available to you in both the hard copy, when requested through your
Provincial Association and electronically.
We
all recognize the importance of including the media into any campaign. A
press
release template is offered for your use along with media
guides ("Ways to raise your profile" and "How
to get your story in the media") on how to get your story in the newspaper
plus ways to
heighten your profile. In addition, a "canned
ad" is included which can be used as a comprehensive awareness
statement of National Hospice Palliative Care Week for inclusion into
bulletins, statements, newsletters or community announcements.
Phase
3
The
third and final aspect produced for National Hospice Palliative Care
week is our very first national public service announcement
(PSA) for television and radio. We
realize time is short so we are asking each Provincial Association to
assist in the distribution to these 30-second ads. If your organization
has established media ties and can ensure airtime of these products
please help us by contacts for airtime. We are thrilled to have created
this first set of National PSA’s . Two versions were made; one in Beta
for TV stations and a VCR tape for your organizations use.
This
is an exciting time in the evolution of the hospice palliative care
movement. Our hope is that these materials will enhance many aspects of
your 2003 Hospice Palliative Care week celebration.
Please let us know how effective they have been. Your valuable
feedback shapes the future for end-of-life caregiving.
